Mindfulness and Eating
So in this podcast I’ve talked some about how we think of our diets oftentimes with religious fervor. Diet and health is important to us. So how do we open our minds to other possibilities when we have everyone and their brother telling us what we should and shouldn’t eat? We start by being mindful of what we are eating and when.
There is a great deal of history that goes into the science that we use to try to determine what is healthy and what is not. But we know that the science is very incomplete. And it is very mechanical. So bringing back the “soul” to our food is one step. And that means educating ourselves on the quality of our food. It also means that we stop moralizing about what someone has told us is good or bad and we start educating ourselves. Think of the gluten story. Following blindly what someone else purports to be the best diet is lunacy. Find out for yourself what you are getting yourself into. And as always keeping in mind that marketing is trying to sell you a product and that product may not be what you actually need.
The way that you know what your body actually needs is to be mindful while eating. To pay attention to what, when and where you are eating. What is your body experiencing when you eat too fast or while doing something else? Instead of joining a group that is dedicated to the latest fad diet, why not create a lunch group that is dedicated to experiencing the food to the fullest. Eating with awareness and mindfulness. Remember the lesson of the French. They eat wonderfully tasty and rich foods. They make eating an event.
